What types of tickets can you get to visit the Palace of Versailles and its Gardens?

There are different types and ticket packages available to visit the Palace of Versailles:

  • Palace of Versailles Ticket with Audioguide: this is usually the most convenient option if you want a more relaxed visit at your own pace, without depending on a guide or joining a group. An audioguide created by an art historian.

  • Guided Tour of the Palace of Versailles (ticket included): Perfect for cultural travelers who want a richer experience, accompanied by an expert guide with whom you will explore every part of the Palace of Versailles and its Gardens.

  • Private tour of the Palace of Versailles with transfer from Paris: the most premium option. A guided tour reserved exclusively for your group, with private transfer included from Paris.

  • Special packages: Palace of Versailles Ticket with Audioguide + Seine River Cruise. There are packages that allow you to combine other experiences in Paris and also save money compared to booking each activity separately.

The official opening hours of the Palace of Versailles state that it is open every day of the week except Mondays. The Palace of Versailles is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Trianon Estate, meanwhile, opens at 12:00 p.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m.

The official opening calendar of the Palace of Versailles runs from Tuesday to Sunday, with Mondays being the only day of the week it is closed. The only exceptional closing days are December 25th, January 1st, and May 1st.

The Palace of Versailles is located at Place d’Armes, 78000 (Versailles). To get there from Paris, there are several options:

  • Train: the most direct option for most travelers is the RER C (regional train line) to the Versailles Château – Rive Gauche station. and then walk to the Palace. It’s the ‘classic’ route because it drops you very close to the main entrance. If your goal is Palace of Versailles (Château de Versailles): the most convenient station is usually Versailles Château – Rive Gauche (RER C), about a 10-minute walk away.. Take the Take the RER C towards Versailles Château – Rive Gauche (it’s one of the western branches of the line). Once you arrive, follow the signs to the Palace. In total, from Paris, it can take between 35 and 45 minutes to reach the Palace of Versailles.

  • Bus: Getting to the Palace of Versailles by bus is possible by combining metro + bus: take metro line 9 to Pont de Sèvres and from there take RATP bus 171 towards the Château de Versailles.. Under normal conditions, the bus can take around 30 minutes (without traffic).

  • Car, taxi or VTC: Yes. By car, the usual access is via the A13 (exit 5 ‘Versailles Centre’), and there are paid parking areas around the site. By taxi or ride-hailing service, travel time can vary greatly depending on traffic and time of day.

If you want to visit the Palace of Versailles and its Gardens without rushing, the most common option is to set aside a full day: allow around 2–3 hours for the interior of the Palace and another 2–3 hours to stroll through the Gardens (more if you want to wander through the groves, see the fountains on show days, or take your time with breaks). On a ‘must-see’ express visit, you could do it in 4–5 hours, but to truly enjoy it, 6 hours is usually more realistic.
